Aluminum 6061 is an Al-Mg-Si alloy (~1.0 Mg, 0.6 Si, 0.28 Cu, 0.20 Cr) - the workhorse general-purpose structural aluminum per ASTM F468 for nonferrous bolting. Standard temper for bolts is T6 (artificially aged): tensile 42 ksi, yield 35 ksi, elongation 10%. Excellent weldability + corrosion resistance, moderate strength.
Marine fastenings, structural framing, transportation equipment, and any application requiring lightweight + atmospheric/seawater corrosion resistance. Most common general-purpose aluminum fastener. Pair with 6061 nuts per ASTM F467 to avoid galvanic mismatch.
6061 is dramatically better in chloride environments because it has only 0.28% copper (vs 4.4% in 2024). Used widely in marine + saltwater structural bolting. 7075 (zinc-based) is better in some industrial atmospheres but less weldable than 6061.
Available across the full F468 range: ASME B18.2.1 hex bolts, B18.3 socket head, B18.6.7M metric machine screws, B16.5 flange studs. Typically supplied in T6 temper unless customer specifies otherwise.
